Wechselsaiting is an interactive sound installation by Veronika Klaus (HSK diploma presentation music and media art). “Echtzeit” presents the exhibition accompanying the diploma presentation in the gallery Talwegeins in Berne.
A plain room turns into an instrument. Loose hanging wire ropes form a sounding curtain. Whoever walks trough the curtain makes the ropes move and interactively actives various sounds of virtual strings. Spatially distributed sounds appear and disappear - the developing tone modulation can be discovered hands on.
The visitors movement makes the ropes swing and enables to influence the random generation and modulation of the sounds. Depening on how and where the ropes start to move, the hidden sounds can be discovered playfully. Single tones move trough the curtain and trough the room, they disappear and a new sounds starts to appear. The curtain offers unlimited possibilites for musical experiments.
Every movement of the strings releases contacts which are processed in realtime via MIDI interface by multiple computers. Tones, sounds and samples, generated in realtime (no pre-loading of samples) are mashed up into a virtually recognized carept of sounds and distributed back to the visitor trough loudspeakers mounted at the top of the curtain.
